Y posts — also called star pickets — are the standard steel fence post for farms worldwide. They are strong, easy to drive and designed to hold wire fencing in place for decades. But not all Y posts are the same. The edge profile — the shape of the flange where the wire sits — determines how well the wire stays put under pressure from wind, livestock and gravity.

Choosing the wrong profile means wire that slips, sags or needs constant re-tensioning. Here is a factory-level breakdown of the three Y post profiles, what each one does best, and how to match the right post to your terrain and stock.
The three Y post profiles
Every Y post starts with the same cross-section: a Y-shaped steel profile with a flat base flange and two angled side flanges. The difference is what happens along the edge of those flanges. We produce three profiles:
- Studded Star Post — raised studs or nibs punched along the flange edges. These grip the wire at each contact point, preventing slippage under load.
- Plain Y-Post — a flat, smooth edge with no anti-slip features. The simplest and most economical design.
- Scalloped Y-Post — a wave or scallop pattern along the flange edge. The curved shape catches wire in the dip of each scallop, providing better retention than a plain edge at a lower cost than studded.

Studded Star Post: the premium choice
The studded star post is the closest to the traditional star picket most people picture. Small raised studs or nibs are punched into the flange surface at regular intervals. When you clip or tie the wire to the post, those studs physically grip the wire and stop it from sliding down or along the post.
This makes it the default choice for standard farm fencing where the wire must not move:
- Standard farm fencing — field fence, hinge joint, ring lock. The studs hold horizontal line wires at the correct height and spacing, even under livestock pressure.
- Areas where wire must not slip — on slopes, around corners and at gates, wire creep is a real problem. Studded posts lock the wire in position.
- Flat to moderate terrain — on flat or gently undulating ground, studded posts give you a reliable, long-lasting install with minimal maintenance.
Specs we produce: Material Q235 steel, tensile strength ≥380 MPa, hot-dip galvanised coating from regular zinc (40 g/m²) up to heavy zinc (200 g/m² on 2.0 mm wire, 230 g/m² on 2.5 mm wire) — also available in black bitumen or painted finish. Plain Y-Post: the economy workhorse
The plain Y-post has a flat, smooth edge with no anti-slip features. It is the simplest design we make, and it is the cheapest option per post.
That simplicity is exactly the right choice in certain situations:
- Flat terrain — on level ground with no slope, gravity is not pulling the wire downhill. A plain edge is enough to hold the wire at the correct height as long as the wire is properly tensioned.
- Temporary fencing — if you are running temporary electric fence or short-term enclosures, you do not need the anti-slip feature of a studded post. Plain posts are quick to install and equally quick to pull and reuse.
- Budget projects — when the budget is tight and the terrain is forgiving, plain posts deliver the structural strength of a Y post at the lowest cost.
Plain posts are also the easiest to drive and pull. With no studs to catch, the post slides cleanly into the ground and comes back out without resistance — a real advantage if you are moving fences regularly.
Scalloped Y-Post: the grip upgrade
The scalloped Y-post sits between the plain and studded profiles. The flange edge is shaped into a wave or scallop pattern — a series of curves that create natural pockets for the wire to sit in.
When wire is tied to a scalloped post, it catches in the dip of each scallop. This gives noticeably better wire retention than a plain edge, without the added manufacturing cost of punched studs:
- Slopes and hills — on ground with any gradient, gravity pulls the wire downhill along the post. The scalloped edge catches the wire and resists that creep. It will not hold as firmly as a studded post, but for most slopes it is more than enough.
- Heavy livestock — cattle, horses and deer lean on fences. That constant pressure tries to push the wire down the post. Scalloped edges provide an extra grip point that plain posts lack.
- Good balance of grip and cost — if studded posts are outside the budget but plain posts feel too risky, scalloped is the practical middle ground.
How to choose
Strip it down to four questions:
- What is the terrain? Flat ground tolerates plain posts. Any slope pushes you towards scalloped or studded. Steep or uneven terrain almost always needs studded.
- What livestock are you fencing? Light pressure (sheep, goats on flat ground) works with plain. Moderate pressure (cattle, horses) benefits from scalloped. Heavy or constant pressure (bulls, deer, dense stocking) calls for studded.
- Is the fence permanent or temporary? Permanent fencing justifies the studded investment. Temporary fencing can use plain posts to save cost and speed up install/remove cycles.
- What is the budget? Plain is the cheapest per post, studded the most expensive. But the price difference per post is small compared to the total cost of a fence line — and the wrong profile can cost more in re-tensioning and wire replacement over time.

Installation tips
Whichever profile you choose, correct installation is what makes the post perform:
- Mark the fence line with string. A taut string line keeps the posts straight and the fence looking professional. It also prevents costly re-drilling.
- Drive at 2–4 m intervals. Closer spacing (2 m) on slopes, around corners and at gates. Wider spacing (3–4 m) on flat, straight runs where the wire is under even tension.
- Drive to a depth of 500–600 mm. This anchors the post deep enough to resist livestock pressure and wind load. On soft ground, go deeper or use longer posts.
- Pro tip for rocky ground: pre-drill a pilot hole with a steel rod or narrow auger. Driving a Y post directly into rocky soil can damage the galvanised coating and bend the flange tips. A pilot hole lets the post slide in cleanly.
