Fencing in the Middle East is a different discipline. Along the Gulf coast the air is loaded with salt, inland the summer UV and dust are relentless, and many of the sites being fenced — oil and gas facilities, military perimeters, industrial parks, residential compounds — exist specifically because they need serious physical security. That combination is why the region consumes large volumes of barbed wire and chain link fence, and why the coating choice matters more than almost anything else on the spec sheet.

Why the Middle East is hard on fences

Three environmental factors shorten the life of a fence in the GCC faster than in most markets. First, coastal salt spray along the Arabian Gulf attacks unprotected zinc aggressively. Second, extreme UV and surface temperatures accelerate coating degradation on galvanised and painted surfaces. Third, wind-blown sand abrades coatings over time, especially near the ground. Add high-value sites and you have a market where the cheapest "galvanised" quote is very often the most expensive fence in the long run.

Barbed wire spec basics

Barbed wire (刺铁丝) is the workhorse of perimeter security. For this region the specification that matters is the strand, the core wire and the barb spacing:

  • Single strand — barbs wrapped around one line wire. Lighter, cheaper, good for temporary or low-load boundaries.
  • Double strand — two line wires twisted together with the barbs gripped between them. Stronger, holds barbs firmly, and is the traditional standard for permanent security fencing.
  • Core wire — typically 1.8–3.0 mm; for security perimeters step up to 2.0–2.8 mm.
  • Barb spacing — 75 mm for high security, 100 mm standard, 150 mm economy.
  • Barb length — 16–22 mm; barbs at 2 or 4 per knot.

For a residential villa or industrial compound in the Gulf, the common answer is double-strand, 2.5 mm core, 75–100 mm barb spacing, hot-dip or PVC coated. For a military or oil & gas site, the same barbed wire is usually installed on top of chain link to create a multi-layer deterrent.

Coating choice for desert and coastal conditions

The coating decides how long the fence survives. The table below shows the practical lifespan by treatment in this region's environment:

In practice, most permanent GCC installations choose either high-quality hot-dip galvanising (inland, cost-effective) or PVC coating (coastal and chemical environments where the extra protection pays for itself). Stainless is reserved for the most sensitive sites. Whatever you choose, put the process and coating weight in writing — electro-galvanised barbed wire has a coating mass an order of magnitude lower than hot-dip and will fail visibly in a few seasons near the coast.

Where you need to see through the fence but keep people out — compounds, warehouses, stadiums, airports, utilities — chain link fence (勾花网) is the standard. Its diamond mesh is flexible, easy to install on uneven ground, and can be specified from light to heavy:

For coastal compounds, PVC-coated chain link is the usual choice; for airports and utilities, hot-dip galvanised mesh with a tighter mesh size is common. Chain link is almost always paired with barbed wire along the top line of the posts for security.

Posts and support

No perimeter works without posts. In the Middle East, Y posts (star pickets) made from high-strength track steel are widely used because they drive into hard ground, take barbed wire clips or chain link fittings, and carry the fence line. Specify a hot-dip galvanised or baked-paint finish, and confirm the post height matches your mesh. For heavier chain link runs, concrete-set posts are common at corners, gates and every 40–50 m as strain posts, with Y posts as droppers in between.

Applications across the GCC

  • Oil & gas and industrial: chain link + double-strand barbed wire on Y posts, hot-dip or PVC coated, often topped with additional security strands.
  • Military and critical infrastructure: the same build-up with heavier wire and tighter barb spacing (75 mm), and stainless or heavy PVC where coastal.
  • Residential compounds and villas: lighter chain link or field fence with a single barbed wire top strand; PVC coating is popular for aesthetics and coastal protection.
  • Construction sites: temporary single-strand barbed wire or chain link, economical and quick to install.
