A fence that fails on a property like that is not a repair job, it is a herd-management problem. Why South American ranches fence this way
Two things shape the choice of fence in Brazil and Argentina: scale and climate. Properties are measured in hundreds or thousands of hectares, so fencing cost per metre decides how much of the ranch actually gets fenced. At the same time, regions range from the humid cerrado to drier pampas, with thunderstorms and strong sun over large areas. That is why the market standard is hinge-joint netting in hot-dip galvanized wire — strong enough for cattle, priced per metre at a level that makes fencing a whole property feasible, and durable enough to stand up for a decade or more.
Hinge joint vs ring lock
For cattle, hinge-joint (拧编) is the traditional and most widely used weave: the horizontal line wires twist around the vertical stays, producing a rectangular mesh that is tighter at the bottom and wider near the top. It is strong, flexible, and handles cattle pushing on it well. Ring-lock (环扣) locks every intersection with a separate ring, giving a flatter, stiffer mesh — it is used where a more rigid, secure fence is required, such as for deer, wildlife, or high-value paddocks. For most beef operations, hinge joint is the right starting point.

The mesh opening matters: too wide and calves slip through, too tight and the fence is unnecessarily
heavy and expensive. A common all-round choice is 7-90-30 — 7 line wires, 90 cm
high, 30 cm vertical spacing — which holds mature cattle while staying economical.
Zinc coating for the climate
Corrosion, not mechanical damage, is the main reason field fence fails in this region. The practical benchmark is hot-dip galvanizing at 80–120 g/m², which gives roughly 10–15 years of outdoor life in most ranching areas. In wet, high-rainfall or coastal regions, upgrade to a heavier coating (for example 200–230 g/m²) to extend the service life significantly. Beware thin electro-galvanized wire — it looks similar at first and rusts in a season or two, which on a big property is an expensive lesson. Put the coating weight on the purchase order and verify it before shipment.
Roll weights & freight
Because ranches buy in volume, freight often costs more than the fence itself, and freight is charged by weight. Roll weight is therefore a spec you should always confirm. As a guide:

Weight depends on wire diameter, mesh and length. Heavier spec (thicker wire, tighter mesh, higher fence) uses more steel and is heavier per roll — compare total landed cost, not just the unit price.
Posts & support
Netting alone does not hold cattle. The line needs posts at intervals, with strain posts at corners and gates. Y posts (star pickets) made from high-strength steel are the common choice — they drive into the ground, take the netting clips, and are fast to install across long runs. Specify hot-dip galvanized posts and match the post length to your mesh height. For the heaviest lines or wet ground, concrete-set steel posts at corners and ends are standard practice.
